PEOPLE living on the Island of Utupua in Temotu province will soon have a new permanent clinic building thanks to their Member of Parliament (MP) Freda Tuki Soriacomua.
The MP for VATUD made the vow during a meeting held with the Temotu Provincial Government (TPG) health division fortnight ago at the Provincial office headquarter, Lata.
Health division officials who met with the MP have briefed her about the deteriorating state of clinics at Utupua and around the province that needs immediate maintenance and renovation.
During her meeting with the health officials ,Ms Soriacomua promised that VATUD constituency will build a new clinic on Utupua to serve the entire population on the island.
She said this will provide the islanders with health services they need thus alleviating the problem of having to travel to Lata hospital for medical treatment.
“I would like to assure you that as soon as I return back to Honiara. building materials for Utupua clinic will be shipped to Utupua on any available transports.The materials that I proposed for the clinic are not going to be for renovation but to build a new permanent clinic. Already we have some budget allocation being set in place for the clinic and we have no problem for building the clinic in Utupua,” Ms Soriacomua said.
She said, the clinic to be build will be of an executive class of modern standard and not the normal classic sub-standard building seen around the province.
She said this would be the same for all clinics in the constituency elaborating this would encourage medical staff working in those clinics to feel at home which in turn would motivate them do their work better for working in a good environment of high standard.
She said, these clinics must have floor tiles and proper sanitation.
Chief nursing officer for Temotu provincial health division John Fono thanked the MP of her plans and assurance to help Temotu provincial government upgrade and build new rural clinics in VATUD.
“This is what we are looking for from national government and MPs in Temotu province to help us improve our rural health centres. The Provincial office could not able to do anything in upgrading clinics within VATUD constituency since we do not have the financial affordability to improve and upgrade our rural clinics. “ he said.
“However, with the help and assurance from MP for VATUD, I would like to thank her for humbling herself in coming down and discussing with us the real issues of health concerns currently affecting the people in the province which needs urgent attention,” Mr Fono said.
