UTUPUA islanders in Temotu province have appealed to both Solomon Telekom and Bmobile/Vodafone companies to extend their communication network services to the island.
They said, both telecommunication firms are cordially invited to construct communication network towers on the island so they too can access communications to the rest of the global community.
Temotu Provincial member for Utupua, Charles Motuangi made the appeal during a gathering of the islanders.
Mr Motuangi said, people on Utupua still face communication problem in the absence of modern communication infrastructure facilities.
He said, the presence of such modern communication infrastructure network on the island would greatly assist his people improve their livelihood through better communication.
He said, while most communities in the country have been privileged to better communication through network services provided by Our Telekom and Bmobile firms, his people are still lacking behind the rest of the country in communication.
“Therefore we need to communicate fast in relaying information about urgent needs from essential services such as local clinics, schools, churches and even during times of disaster,” he said.
He said, the remote location of the island also makes it more ideal to demand a better means of communication so that unforeseen circumstances like very sick patients could be relayed to better equipped medical centres for treatment.
Member of Parliament for Temotu Vatu, Freda Tuki, present during the gathering had vowed to pursue the Islanders requests with the two respective companies.
Ms Tuki told the islanders that while disputes over land sites to accommodate construction of communication network towers is seen as contributing obstacle to such development initiative, she is fully prepared to go full steam in pursuit of their demand.
