STATE owned national secondary school – King George VI National Secondary School unveiled its new school flag on Monday.
Its the first in the country and facilitated by the National Scouts Association of Solomon Islands.
A statement from the school said, the unveiling and raising of the flag together with the national flag where saluted by the Deputy Prime Minister, Douglas Ete and the British High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, H.E. Dominic Mikeljohn.
In his remarks, Mr Ete acknowledged the importance of national pride and also pride in the academic excellence and leadership in the Nations’ premier institution.
The Principal Samuel Fangata, affirmed that King George VI school as a premier institution of the country endeavours to uphold the virtues placed on it and also to abide by the National constitution of this sovereign nation.
“Being a multicultural and multinational institution, we have endeavoured to ensure the school is not only united in nationalism under the Solomon Islands Flag but also identified through its virtues – excellence and leadership.
“Therefore, our flag signifies this. The blue, red and white are our school colours and the two stars on the blue are the pillars representing these two virtues. The white unifies us all and carries our school logo identifying our integrity and uniqueness as the premier educational institution in Solomon Islands,” said Mr Fangata.
The flags were carried and raised by smartly dressed students who had become scout affiliates at King George VI school.
The student body and teachers participated in a parade and stood at attention as the flags were raised and speeches were given.
The short ceremony was to witness the blessing of the King George VI flag and the national flag of Solomon Islands as part of the recent distribution for Honiara schools by MEHRD and MNUPR through Honiara City Council Education Division to introduce flag raising in school assemblies.
The flag raising ceremony was also graced by the presence of dignitaries from Ministry of Education, SI Scouts Association and the United Nation.
