HONIARA City Council (HCC) health division has called on city residents to build and use proper toilet facilities.
The city council health division says the public are encouraged to call at their headquarters to purchase cheap equipment to enable them build proper toilet facilities in their residential homes.
It says the move to sell cheap equipment is intended at encouraging Honiara residents who do not own proper toilet facilities to comply with standard and safe health requirements.
The council says people must be discouraged from using nearby bushes or rivers and streams as lavatories because the practice is unhygienic and poses health risks to humans and the environment.
It says contamination of the environment from human waste pauses great health risks of outbreak of life-threatening diseases.
The health division says it is the responsibility of everyone living in and around the capital to make sure they own proper toilet facilities for convenience.
