MEN have been urged to respect women and girls and treat them as fellow humans.
Founder and president of non-government organisation Hearts of Hope, Janet Justice Aihari made the call following the death of a nine-year-old girl in north Malaita, over the weekend.
The girl was alleged killed by a man during an attempted rape incident near her village.
Ms Aihari said the news was horrifying and inhumane.
“For an adult to attack a girl of this age is simply unbelievable. It is inhumane to say the least,” Ms Aihari added.
“Please men, respect our girls and women. We are all humans,” she said.
She urged the government, churches and communities not to stand by and watch.
“Such horrific crimes are confronting our society. We must deal with them head-on.
“This young girl has a future ahead of her. That future has now been cut short by a man with no dignity and no respect for human lives,” Ms Aihari said.
She also urged the police to ensure justice is served in this case.
Auki police confirmed a man has been arrested and detained in police custody for questioning.
The girl died at Kilu’ufi Hospital after she was rushed there following the incident on Saturday.
