United Nation Development Program (UNDP) in partnership with the Ministry of National Unity Reconciliation and Peace (MNURP) handed over a number of equipment to the National Psychiatric unit at the National Psychiatric Unit centre at Kiluufi hospital in Malaita province.
Speaking during the handing over director of peace and reconciliation Reuben Lilo said, the human society project through MNURP aims to support human security and to social harmony in Guadalcanal, Malaita and Honiara.
He said, the project addresses topic related to conflict preventionand peace building, water and sanitation and economic security.
The project is implemented by the ministry of health and medical services, UNDP, ILO and UNICEF.
Mr Lilo added that the consultation with the MNURP and key health authorities took place starting June 2015 inorder to identify modalities for basic increasing of local capacity in Malaita province.
These areas included;
· Psychosocial recovery of people with mental and physical disabilities, especially focused by past tensions.
· To provide capacity building measures for successful recovery from violent conflict by supporting the psychiatric unit.
The equipment handed to the unit yesterday included 8 tonner cartridges, 5 cabinets x 4 drawers, 4 office tables and desks, 6 office chairs, 3 cushion chairs x3 seater, 1 stand ice box (freeze), 25 plastic chairs, 4 air conditions, 5 photocopy papers x 5ctns, 1 cloth dryer, 1 washing machine, 1 heater water Urn and 1 food safe.
Some equipment are yet to be handed over are, (1) projector and screen (set), 3 computers (desk top)and UPS and 1 photocopy, scanner and printing machine.
During the ceremony director of the National Psychiatric unit of Solomon Islands Mr Stephen Aritewa thanked Mr Lilo for his hard work in initiating these donations from UNDP.
He said, this is the first of this kind of donation to be received from any development partners.
Mr Aritewa also thanked UNDP for their donation as a milestone for the national psychiatric unit of Solomon Islands.
The development partners UNDP made a call to the staff of the psychiatric unit to coordinate the equipment well and take a good care for the equipment.
The UNDP is looking forward for their working together with psychiatric unit through the human security project.
