A large bridge some 20 kilometers north of Malaita’s headquarter Auki, needs urgent attention, residents said.
The Fiu River Bridge links the Northern population of Malaita to Auki and the heavy downpour early this year has affected the road and the bridge.
It deteriorated further during recent heavy downpours to a state of near separation of the road from the bridge, making it dangerous for vehicles to access the bridge.
Dalgro Company has won the bid to repair roads in Auki and residents asked if the road contractor could quickly fix that specific spot before starting their road repair works.
“Last week, a car ditched in the River as a result of the access difficulty,” one resident said.
Malaita Provincial Police Commander (PPC Alfred Uiga said the car was damaged after it fell and sunk in the river although police recovered it and took it to Auki police station for investigation.
“The driver escaped unharmed but police are investigating to substantiate suspicions of drink-driving.”
Meanwhile Dalgro Company is now preparing to establish and roll out their road repair works in Auki.
