FAMOUS radio announcer Bartholomew Basia has called it quits after serving 37 years with the national broadcaster, Solomon Island Broadcasting Corporation (SIBC).
Well known as Bart Basia, and now in his early 60’s, Mr Basia started his career as a radio announcer with former Solomon Islands Broadcasting Service in the late 70’s.
Mr Basia’s unique radio voice is most familiar to many keen listeners of Radio Happy Isles or SIBC.
During his career, Mr Basia was famous for radio live coverage commentaries of major events of importance in the country.
He had also made numerous live commentaries on international sports especially the South Pacific Games and soccer matches both here and overseas.
Mr Basia told Solomon Star he had decided to officially retire from work at the end of December 2015.
SIBC General Manager, Ashley Wickham confirmed accepting Mr Basia’s retirement letter effective from 31st of December last year.
The veteran radio announcer for more than three decades will no doubt be greatly missed by his keen listeners as this is already evidenced by numerous comments via social media.
Mr Basia comes from the Reef Islands in Temotu Province.
