The government will conduct a full state funeral in honour of statesman and the country’s first Prime Minister Sir Peter Kenilorea.
Sir Peter died last Thursday at the National Referral Hospital, age 72.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Manasseh Maelanga told the Sunday Star a committee within his ministry is working on the arrangement.
“As soon as they finalise the programme, we will announce the date and venue of the state funeral,” Maelanga said on Saturday.
“But it is likely to be early this week,” he added.
Maelanga said Sir Peter’s death was a huge loss for the country.
“He is one of our great leaders and is respected not only here in Solomon Islands but also at the regional and international arena for his outstanding contribution in politics and leadership.”
