THE Parliamentary Opposition Group is calling on the Minister of Health & Medical Services, Dr. Tautai Angikimua, Kaitu’u to rectify the many issues affecting our National Referral Hospital (NRH).
In a statement, the Opposition Group said the Minister and his responsible officers are obliged to inform the nation on how they are addressing serious issues faced by the NRH.
The Opposition pointed out that one of the most serious issue is the closure of the NRH operating theatres.
The Opposition said it is common knowledge that two of the main operating theaters were closed down due to its bad state.
It is understood that the Labor Division gave the orders for the closer.
And then, a sincere gesture from a reputable local company to repair the theater was rejected citing that the technicalities surrounding the theatre as the main reason.
“The Minister must inform this nation on the progress of work on the theatres and when it should re-open as there are patients awaiting to undergo some very serious operations that can also be life-threating as well,” it said.
As medical professionals, the statement said the minister and his officials should know better the urgency of the matter.
“The ministry of health must do the right thing and repair the place as soon as possible as we are dealing with people’s lives here,” it said.
The Opposition said the minister and his officials need to pull up their socks, urging them not to turn a blind eye on the realities of the awful state of the NRH.
Meanwhile, the Opposition said apart from the many issues affecting NRH, the Minister is also urged to update the nation on the current status of the NRH relocation proposal, the proposed hospital for Makira province and Nazar’s $387M hospital project proposal for Malaita province.
