THE country is currently facing a shortage in the chicken feed for layers which has triggered so much worry amongst local poultry farmers.
Report reaching this paper yesterday claimed that poulty farmers in the country are finding it hard to cope with the feed shortage as their main supplier Vuvula poultry is running out of layer feed for the past two weeks.
A poultry farmer Kungalai David Alaha told this paper yesterday, the current feed shortage has affected his checkens.
“The feed shortage has left me with no option but to feed my layers with a different feed (grower),” Mr Alaha said.
“I farm layers for the past 10 years and this is the first time that we experience such feed shortage in the country and I have no option but feed my layers with grower which is not its right,” he said.
He said after feeding his layers with grower, he experienced a decline in egg production throughout the week.
“I feed 600 layers and I usually collected 400 – 500 eggs every day, but after I feed my layers with grower, I experienced a decline in daily egg production to just over 200 daily,” he said.
He claimed other local layer farmers in the country are also experiencing the same difficulty due to the feed shortage.
Mr Alaha said, the shipment of feeds have already been in the country but are still not cleared due to issues related to ports clearance.
“The shipment is still on a boat anchored off the Point Cruz harbour.”
He said local farmers will be greatly affected if the delay continues.
