THE Parliamentary Opposition Group wants the Government to confirm whether any appointments have been made for the country’s diplomatic offices overseas.
In a statement issued yesterday, the Opposition Group said they understand that the country’s diplomatic offices in Taiwan and Canberra have been left vacant whilst there are plans to replace the head of mission in New York.
The statement said the Opposition Group understands names of three candidates have been prematurely released in the media which calls for the Government to confirm the posting of the candidates.
“The Government must come out clearly to confirm or deny this or better still inform us whether there has been any progress made on the appointments,” it said.
The Opposition encouraged the Government to follow the right procedure when appointing our diplomatic representatives to head our missions overseas.
“It is important that political nepotism and favor should not influence the appointments. Individuals appointed must be done on merit,” the Opposition reminded the Government.
The statement adds that the Government must also take the right approach by going through the right process to appoint our overseas diplomats including scrutiny by the Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee.
“By making use of the Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee there is a higher chance for the best candidate to be chosen based on merit,” it said.
