The Honiara Public-Private Cooperation Committee has met on progresses of the working groups to ensure Honiara is kept clean with conducive environment.
The committee is setup under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funded LEAF project.
It comprised of representatives from various stakeholders, including the Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau and the Honiara City Council.
City mayor Alfrence Fatai is the committee’s chair.
Discussions on the way forward covers existing pilot projects, initiatives to address growing waste management through education, awareness and proactive rubbish collection.
Fatai said it was good to have the committee, which was made up of professionals from all walks of life, looking into the urgent needs of the city.
“Waste collection for that matter is a big problem in Honiara and we need to work things out to addressing this,” he said.
Fatai added that it will be slow and may take time to sink into the minds of the general populace overtime but it must be done.
The mayor said the sad thing is the project will come to end sometime soon and it was very important that the committee continue its work.
“The council is very supportive of such initiative and is willing to take over the current project once it ends,” Fatai said.
“Whilst the council will be seriously looking into this, it is also worth noting that our people should now start to think seriously of their behaviour and attitude to waste or rubbish in the city.”
