Plans to build a senior national secondary school at Ohoraha in west Are’are, Malaita, are progressing smoothly.
That was according to vice-chairperson of the Ohoraha landowners association Channel Nori.
“We have met and signed consent Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development (MEHRD) through permanent Secretary Dr Franco Rodie,” Nori said.
He said the signing of the MOU was done last Thursday in Honiara.
“This is the kind of approach that the government is looking for, that resources owners coming forward and request such facilities,” Rodie told the delegation.
A nine-member delegation representing sub-tribes on Ohoraha land called on the Ministry of Education to sign the MOU.
Nori said the move to establish this school was a long-term vision of the elderlies of the land since 1965, but they have not been able to take it up with the government.
“However, it is now in our hands so we will take it from here.”
Nori added that West Are’are Constituency Development Taskforce (WCDTF) is responsible for making the arrangements.
“We first met with the Malaita Provincial Government about the plan before we came here to approach the ministry,” he said.
Nori said that this move is done at their own cost to show that they are serious with their intention for the government to build a national secondary school there.
He thanked the ministry for accepting the plan and looking forward for the establishment of the school in the near future.
