LEADER of Opposition Honorable Jeremiah Manele has congratulated the Republic of China’s new President Her Excellency Dr Ing-Wen Tsai and Vice President His Excellency Dr Chien-Jen Chen on their election victories.
Mr Manele conveyed his congratulations when contributing to the congratulatory motion moved by the Prime Minister in Parliament on Tuesday.
In his supporting statement, Mr Manele said the congratulatory motion is timely.
He said the motion is in order in respect and recognition of one of Solomon Islands closest friends.
“On this note, on behalf of the Opposition Group and my people of Hograno/Kia/Havulei constituency, I wish to join the Prime Minister in extending our warmest congratulations and sincere felicitations to their Excellencies as they assume office,” he said.
The Leader of Opposition said Solomon Islands and ROC Taiwan are two very close friends and both share fundamental values and principles of democracy, the rule of law and human rights.
Therefore, Mr Manele said he is confident that under the new leadership in Taipei these values and principles will continue to be upheld.
He said it is also important that Solomon Islands continue to support Taiwan’s bid to participate in the work of various international bodies including UN specialized agencies.
“I also take this opportunity to acknowledge the support and assistance that successive Taiwanese Governments have rendered to our country since we established diplomatic ties 33 years ago. The support rendered to us was done even in the most difficult times during the ethnic crisis. Taiwan is indeed a true friend,” Mr Manele said.
The Leader of Opposition added that bilateral relations and people to people connections between the two countries have prospered over the years and Taiwan have continued to assist Solomon Islands in various sectors such as health, education, fisheries, agriculture and rural development.
As such he said he is confident that the bilateral assistance will continue to prosper under the new administration in Taipei.
“In this connection, I believe there is room to explore further opportunities in trade, commerce and investment that will benefit both countries,” he said.
