A NEW weather station will be commission at Tingoa, Renbel Province, next week.
This project is a component of the DCC Government’s strategic policy on expanding the country’s Observational Network for early warning services for the country.
Being the first to be officially commissioned in the province, it will provide vital weather information for the country, the region and the world.
Director of Meteorology, David Hiriasia said the importance of establishing a weather station at Tingoa is very obvious.
“The importance of establishing a weather station in Tingoa is quite obvious because in the country we know that Rennell and Bellona province is a cyclone-prone area so we need information on weather observations to help out in terms of cyclone monitoring and also early warnings in relation to tropical cyclones,” he said.
Mr Hiriasia added that the station will also serve Solomon Islands, the region, and the world.
“The station is situated in a strategic location with regards to cyclone early warning systems so it’s not only for Solomon Islands but regionally and also internationally, data from the Tingoa Met Station will be very important in terms of cyclone formation and tracking as well as the warnings associated with tropical cyclones.”
A government delegation to be led by the Minister of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster and Meteorology will travel to Tingoa to officially Commission the station on June 22.
