The Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (OPMC) has urged the Leader of the Independent Group, Hon Derek Sikua not to mislead the nation with unapprised statements.
The call follows the Independent Group Leader’s implication in a statement issued yesterday that the ruling Democratic Coalition for Change Government (DCCG) is not addressing the recommendations of the Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) on the ethnic crisis.
The OPMC said as stated by the Prime Minister in his National Apology Speech to open the National Apology and Healing Programme at the Rove Police Ground on the 4th of July 2016, DCCG is finalising the recommendations of the TRC Report which suggests ways of attending to the issues and concerns of both the perpetrators and victims of the crisis. It added that these issues and concerns will be taken up in a Reparation Bill that DCCG will take to Parliament.
“It would be prudent for the Leader of the Independent Group to ensure his statements are reflective of the truth so as not to mislead the nation about government policy programmes and decisions. His implication that the government is not addressing the recommendations of the TRC Report is grossly misleading because DCCG’s policy intention is to address the underlying issues of the ethnic crisis.
“This policy intention is based on DCCG’s belief that only by addressing the underlying issues of the crisis the country can successfully move forward with the task of nation-building.”
The OPMC said the DCCG requires the collective support and understanding of all Solomon Islanders, more so its national leaders, in its undertaking to address the underlying issues of that unfortunate past because it will definitely be a hard and exhaustive process.
