Police will commence an operation today that will see police visiting targeted communities in Honiara and across the country.
Deputy Police Commissioner Gabriel Manelusi said this is a new approach that police intend to do to establish a better partnership with the community.
He said this is to improve information and intelligence gathering so that together the community, police can identify and deal with the issue and not wait until something happens.
Mr Manelusi revealed this approach at the weekly police press conference yesterday at the Rove Police Headquarters.
“From this approach, police will continue to improve that partnership to build community trust.
“As we know today policing is based on working together to solve problems.”
Mr Manelusi said the police force is enforcing a crime prevention strategy and one key stakeholder is the community.
He said police in Honiara, Guadalcanal and the Provinces will today visit houses in the outskirts of the city and towns s part of the operation.
“In Honiara they will start from Lungga, Vara Creek to Sun Valley and also Koa hill.
“Those are the targeted areas.”
He added that since police will be visiting houses, they appeal to the general public to support them when they visit the communities.
“Don’t fear them, be a friend to the police.
“The police are there to share so help them.”
Police Commissioner Frank Prendergast added that this operation is about crime prevention therefore will continue to work on community engagement.
He said this is to build bridges in alliances with the community.
