Malaita Police probe death in North Malaita
Auki Police in Malaita is currently investigating a suspected murder case in North Malaita after a male in his late 20s was found dead on an island just outside Walo after a fishing trip.
According to Auki Provincial Police Commander (PPC) acting Timothy Apaesi, police have already arrested a male suspect over the weekend in relation to the suspicious death while investigation is ongoing.
The male suspect was arrested on Friday night and is currently locked up at the Auki police custody awaiting further police investigation.
According to initial report, the deceased (Uncle) and his nephew who both hails from the same village of U’uki were on a fishing trip when the deceased met his death.
On Wednesday 21st September they travelled to an island to fish. When they reached the island, the nephew proceeded on with his fishing activity leaving the deceased and other three boys on the shoreline.
The deceased while waiting for his nephew who was out fishing in the sea allegedly consumed alcohol with three other boys.
Then the three boys left.
The nephew decided to have a rest and came to the shore. The deceased then decided that its time for him to fish.
The nephew who was busy with his catches, later started looking for the deceased.
After his unsuccessful search, assuming that the deceased already walked home left the seashore and took off to U’uki village which is located inland.
However, when he got home and asked for the deceased, the deceased’s wife told him that he never returned.
On Thursday 22nd September, the deceased’s relatives then mount a search only to discover his dead body on an Island just outside of Walo.
They found the deceased with a home made fishing raft and a fish in his bag.
According to the police, they are still yet to confirm if the death was a direct result of an unlawful act.
In the meantime, Auki police are still waiting for medical report to confirm if the results of medical examination proves that the decease was murdered or not.
