THE government must be serious in the fight against the invasive Giant African Snail.
This was the statement of Wilson Rara of Matapona in North Guadalcanal.
Mr Rara said currently the snail is destroying food gardens in the Matapona communities.
“If the authority responsible wants to control this snail, they must be serious with it,” a concerned Mr Rara told Solomon Star.
He said the people of Matapona depend heavily on their food gardens but the snail is becoming a threat to their gardens.
He said at first the snails only eat banana leaves and other plants but now they are turning to garden crops and fruits.
“This is a real threat to us because we rural people depend a lot on local food.
“Just recently, we have discovered that they started to eat our kumara gardens as well,” Mr Rara said.
“The big snails eat the kumara and the small ones eat the leaves – killing our kumara gardens.”
Mr Rara said this is a real situation and responsible authorities must work hard against this growing snail population.
