KUKUM Police Traffic Centre says the introduction of the three lanes at the Mataniko Bridge has eased the traffic congestion during peak hours.
The centre’s police inspector Brian Surimalefo said since introducing the three lanes traffic has improved.
“Traffic has flowed according to the proposed measures and traffic management during peak hours,” Mr Surimalefo said.
The decision to implement the three lanes on the bridge came after a meeting led by National Transport Fund US Technical Ministry of Infrastructure Development, the police and other stakeholders last month.
Mr Surimalefo said the only traffic issue now is the Honiara City Council roundabout and the bus stop near Holy Cross Cathedral.
“There is another plan we are looking at for the Honiara City Council roundabout because it is one area that is still causing queue for vehicles during peak hours,” he said.
In the meantime, he said traffic officers are deployed to the Honiara City Council roundabout to manage the traffic from the Old Mataniko Bridge, Mbokonavera and traffic from east and west Honiara during peak hours.
He said once the proposed plan is approved traffic officers will apply it to ease the Honiara City Council roundabout traffic.
