Five members of the Solomon Islands Police Contingent in Darfur, Sudan who are deployed in the United Nations & African Hybrid Mission (UNAMID) were awarded the UN Peacekeepers Medalson Tuesday 23rd May 2017.
It was a historic and emotional ceremony and was graced by the Acting Head of Mission, the Deputy Head Mission and the Fiji Ambassador to the African Union and Ethiopia.
Commissioner of Police Matthew Varley congratulates our officers for their hard work, dedication and courage which is acknowledged through receiving these medals.
Mr. Varley said, “I am proud of thesignificant contribution that the Solomon Islands Contingent has made in the service of peace in Darfur.
“This is the first ever Solomon Islands Contingent to receive the prestigious medal, proving their professionalism and capability in Peacekeeping Operations.”
Staff Sergeant of the Solomon Islands Contingent Charles Metopa saidheacknowledged the Contingent remains vigilant and is preparing to return home when our Tour of Duty ends of September this year.”
He said, “I would like to also thank all Contingent Members for the professionalism that they have demonstrated and ensuring that we represent the RSIPF and Solomon Islands well in our capacities within the Mission.”
“The standard of discipline and professionalism exhibited in the Mission is second to none and I am confident that the next Contingent will continue with the same discipline and professionalism and can even take it further into new heights,” Mr. Metopa said.
