The Honiara Amateur Boxing Association (HABA) fortnightly competitions proposed for this year is high likely will not happen.
HABA president John Firifote confirmed this to Star Sports on Wednesday.
“HABA’s proposed fortnightly bouts for this year will likely not happen,’’ he said.
He said Honiara City Council (HCC) has decided not to allow HABA to host its bouts inside the newly renovated Multipurpose Hall.
“The reason been given is that our boxing ring is too heavy and it will crash the newly refurbished court,’’ he said.
He added HCC has promised to get carpet from Fiji that will be placed on top of the court before the ring; however it was not done until today.
“But from my understanding Multipurpose Hall is purposely meant for sports in the country to use.’
“However, since HCC came up with their decision it will be a big setback for boxing in the country which was just revived after the last pacific games in PNG.
“Despite this unwelcoming news HABA would like to urge our boxing clubs to continue with their normal training sessions.’’
He said HABA will be looking for other alternative venue to host their competitions.
“In the mean time we will be looking for other alternative venue to host our competitions.’’
On the same note Firifote called on their mother body the Solomon Islands Amateur Boxing Association (SIABA) to stand with HABA find alternative ways that can help boxing in the country prosper.
