Spaniard identify players to join national team
SOLOMON Islands coach Felipe Vega-Arango has identified 4 players in the Solomon Cup to join the national team.
Speaking exclusively to Star Sports on Monday, the Spaniard said after watching all the provincial teams he has decided to let the public know players who caught his attention.
“These are good quality players I like as a coach and believe with their qualities they could add something extra to our national team,” Vega-Arango said.
With a couple of goals already under his belt in the competition, Central Shields centre forward Kennedy Watenae caught the Spaniard’s eyes.
“I really like his finishing abilities in front of goal and I had already contacted his coach who was pleased to hear of my interest in his player.
“It’s good for him as a provincial player to training with the national team,” he said.
Man of the match in the game between Malaita Eagles and Isabel Frigates Clifton Aumae is the second player on the Spaniard wish list.
“Clifton is a smart player who has a better understanding of the game.
“He could be a great player if he was trained by a professional coach from an early age of 6.
“I would like to use him in the middle with Fa’arodo if he is available,” he added.
Vega-Arango stressed Clifton work commitments in Auki could be an issue.
Aumae’s commitment with the Eagles for their crucial game tomorrow means he won’t attend training with the national team today.
The national team coach side he will discuss with the Malaita Eagles management concerning Aumae’s availability later this week.
Another Malaita Eagles player picked by Vega-Arango is central defender Andrew Raragia.
The Eagles captain manned the backline impressively with great awareness.
Group B leaders Western Turtles defender Martin Rence is another player caught the Spaniard attention.
Aumae, Rence and Raragia will join the national side for training depending on their availability.
Meanwhile, Watenae will join the national team training session, Tuesday.
