The Solomon Islands Students Association (SISA)independence games kicked off yesterday at Laucala campus, Suva.
The games saw cultural groupings within the SISA body competing against each other.
This was part of their long week of celebration of the Solomon Islands 39th Independence Anniversary which would be celebrated up till Friday where their biggest program in the day and cultural dancing in the evening.
Games would be played up till Thursday of this week where the 11 cultural groupings would play four games against each other which included soccer for men, netball for women and basketball and volleyball as mixture of both the genders.
The opening of their games was held yesterday where all the cultural groupings paraded before their Acting Sport chairperson gave his remarks.
Leading the parade was Makira Ulawa Students Association (MUSA) then followed by Temotu Students Association (TSA) before other cultural groupings.
Speaking during his remarks Derick Liosulia said their parade was very meaningful in a way that showed unity and harmony that stayed among every Solomon Islanders.
“Most of the times we stayed out from each other so the aim of these games are not more about competition but an opportunity for all to mingle together and try to build the unity and harmony where all Solomon Islanders should have,” Liosulia said.
He said as future leaders of the Solomon Islands they must stand up to build the country by playing sports because it was one mean where Solomon Islanders could come and fit in to each other.
Liosulia then urged every individual to display respect towards each other during their games as they were all Solomon Islanders.
Meanwhile, Liosualia thanked the Solomon Islands community in Fiji for coming out and part of the parade that officially opened their games.
Officially opening the 2017 SISA games was the SISA secretary Charles Kadamana by kicking a soccer ball.
