LACK of access to education in our country is believed to be the main contributing factor to the increasing rate of illiteracy in our country.
Today, we have so many kids or even adult who cannot read or write. And this is a grave concern for our country.
There are cases of adults who may have dressed up fancy but yet cannot even write their names.
It____s an embarrassing and situation for many people when they are faced with a situation where they cannot even write or spell their names.
A lot of illiterate people have regretted not completing their education.
So to address this there are adults who have undertaken literacy classes in order to tackle this problem.
There are many success stories about how adults are able to read and write after 30 or 40 years.
Read Solomon Island (READ SI) is one of the organisations which had been active in trying to organise activities to ensure young children and even adults out there have the opportunity to read.
There are also other non-government organisations and Church groups which have been involved in organizing literacy classes in our communities.
For some of these adults, the first book they learn how to read is the Bible.
Interestingly most of the participants are usually women.
It shows how women are keen to learn.
The 2015 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) final report has revealed that 82% of women in country are now literate, this is 4% increase from the 2006-2007 survey which stood at 78%.
Based on the survey, access to education has resulted in more women being able to learn how to read and write.
In the past more women have not attended any school, but now it has changed.
The survey should ring a bell about the need to give opportunity to many of our young children to attend school.
Parents have an important role to play when it comes to encouraging our children.
There are parents who never care about their kids’ future or their education.
They blame lack of money for not enrolling their children into school.
In our communities today, they are many young children that are not attending school at all.
Its a pity indeed because if nothing is done to educate the young children to become literate then we will have a problem with an increase number of illiterate problem in our country.
And by having more of such problem might bring problem to the country because they won’t understand any thing and won’t find a descent work to support themselves or their families.
Therefore this country needs a compulsory education system that offers free education for all.
