WORKING on a volunteering bases in the sporting landscape in the country is said to be quite challenging but a local man has had shown tremendous commitment since stepping into the local arena.
Over the weekend, former Kurukuru head coach Victor Wai’a has received a medal from the Solomon Islands Government for long and dedicated service to the government and people of Solomon Islands in sports development.
Wai’a received his award from the Head of State, Governor General Sir Frank Kabui at the 39th Independence Anniversary celebration on Friday last week at Lawson Tama.
In an interview with Star Sports, Wai’a said it’s really a privilege to get recognition from the people of Solomon Islands and the national government.
“For me it’s a great honour to receive such award and get recognition for my contribution to our national sports development.
“I am really happy as one of the citizens of this country who has had contributed towards development of sports in the country,” he said.
The native Malaitan man was given the task to lead our National Futsal side, Kurukuru to their historic debut appearance at the 2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Brazil.
Speaking to this paper, he recalled 2008 as one of the best moments of his career.
“Taking a youthful Kurukuru side and qualify to the FIFA Futsal World Cup back in 2008 was a proud moment for me to cherish forever.
“It was a great achievement for me, the players and the country as a whole.
“Also during my time as national futsal coach, FIFA had once appointed me as the first local FIFA futsal instructor from 2011 to 2013,” he vividly recalled.
Another work carried out by Wai’a which proves dividends is his role with our Para-athletes.
“Just recent in the Para Pacific Games we have done pretty well in the Table Tennis tournament.
“One of our athletes in wheelchair, Helen got bronze in 2015 and last year we attended the Fiji open Para-Table tennis where two of our athletes won medals,” he added.
Despite his recent achievements, most Solomon Islanders will be well versed with Wai’a in the in-door code of football.
“I am proud of my work with most of the current Kurukuru players from an early age of 12.
“We always return home with trophies from state tournaments in Australia,” he stressed.
He is currently the head coach of Indo-Solo a fast improving futsal club.
Wai’a also wishes to thank family and friends support to his success story.
“Thank you to my family and friends for being there for me in my challenging moments,” the proud sports individual said.
