POLICE in Kirakira, Makira/Ulawa Province are sweeping territories around Kirakira insearch of a prisoner who broke free from Kirakira Prison on Friday night.
The escapee is Donald Suaoma Niga of Marau Bay, West Makira.
Makira Provincial Police Commander Peter Sitai said Niga was on remand for allegations of rape at the time of his escape.
Commander Sitai said Niga escaped unnoticed by the prison officer on duty between 7pm and 8pm on Friday 21st July.
When Sunday Star contacted Kirakira Police Station on Saturday afternoon, Mr Sitai said the escapee has yet to be found.
However, he said police had deployed two search parties to West Makira utilizing sea and land transports to search for Niga.
He appealed to communities in and around Kirakira and those in West Makira to assist police in the search to recapture the prisoner.
