FOUR local government officers will be undertaking two years of study in South Korea under the Korean government.
Korean Overseas International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) office in Honiara recently held a pre-departure orientation for the four successful Master’s Degree scholarship recipients.
With a mission to nurture talented students from developing countries, KOICA invites high-caliber students from developing countries and helps them gain professional and systematic knowledge that will play a key role in their home country’s development.
A statement from the office said, to accomplish this mission, KOICA has been operating master’s degree courses with leading Korean universities in the fields of economics, trade, women’s empowerment, rural development and so forth.
“In particular, this program has significantly strengthened the relationships between Korea and the student’s home countries.
“Students, who have been given an opportunity to see Korea’s experience in poverty reduction and socio-economic development, will gain a deeper understanding of Korea and contribute to the future social, political and economic ties between Korea and Solomon Islands.”
KOICA Scholarship Program is fully committed to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is determined to expand its efforts to nurture future talents from Solomon Islands. In this year, the four scholarship recipients will be undertaking their Master’s Degree studies in various universities in South Korea.
As part of the development for Solomon Islands, KOICA emphasized that the fellowship programs will contribute significantly through Human Resource Development where successful recipients may be able to gain professional and systematic knowledge that will play a key role for the country’s development.
Peter Trena from the Ministry of Agriculture & Livestock will be doing a Master Degree in Agricultureal Processing & Marketing at the University of Konkuk from 8th August 2017 to 21 December 2018.
Rolly Viga who is working in the National Referral Hospital will be doing a Master Degree in Global Health Security at the Yonsei University from 10 August 2017 to 21 December 2018.
Hezilyn Lang Kanamoli who is working in the Ministry of Women, Youth, Children & Family Affairs will be doing her Master Degree in Community Development at the Yonsei University from 10 August 2017 to 9 January 2019.
And Robert Misimaka from the Ministry of Lands, Housing & Survey will be doing his Master Degree in Urban Development Policy at the University of Chung Ang from 10 August 2017 to 9 January 2019.
The Country Coordinator of KOICA WFK office in Solomon Islands, Ms. Nami An congratulated the scholarship recipients at the pre-departure orientation that was held and also to brief them on what to expect and how to prepare for living and studying in South Korea.
She expressed her highest appreciation during the pre-departure orientation session and wished all the recipients greater commitment and fruitful outcome in their studies.
The four recipients will be departing next week to begin their Master’s Degree courses in South Korea.
