The Parliamentary Opposition is callings on the government to broaden its suspension order in relation to the civil aviation saga.
In a statement on Sunday the Opposition Office said the suspension being served to the Director of Civil Aviation should also include the Minister of Communication and Civil Aviation, the Attorney General and the Civil Aviation Permanent Secretary during the audit period- 2013 and 2014.
At the same time it said, “Operation Janus and the Leadership Code Commission (LCC) must question the suspended Director of Civil Aviation over his allegations against his superiors.”
The Opposition is reacting to the Civil Aviation Special Audit fall out.
The Opposition pointed out that “the suspension of these leaders is important and in line with the General Orders to allow investigations to proceed without undue hindrance and provide an opportunity for those implicated to clear their names.”
The Opposition said, “It is concerned about the scale of the activities exposed by the recent audit and is appealing for justice to take its course without fear and intimidation.”
The Opposition further stressed that such misuse and abuse of power are a common in government offices so it is appropriate those who continue to abuse their powers meet the full force of the law.
The Parliamentary Opposition stated that one reason the country is losing valuable financial resources is because those in authority and leadership continue to abuse the government system for their personal gains without restraint.
“As a result of those corrupt practices, people in the country continue to suffer from lack of basic services such as good roads and well maintained airports, improved medical services, increased employment and so forth,” the Opposition said.
“Leaders and those given the authority to manage the finances and properties of the country must do so with honesty and integrity,” the Opposition stressed.
The Parliamentary Opposition further stated that “those who abuse their power and the trust of the people of Solomon Islands must be held accountable and brought to justice, so that the bureaucracy is not short-changed, but is frugal, empowered and efficient to serve the needs and well-being of the citizens of the nation.”
The Opposition in reference to an article by the suspended Civil Aviation Director George Satu in which he alleged that the Attorney General, the Civil Aviation PS and his Minister are also benefiting from contracts in the ministry, called on relevant bodies such as the Leadership Code Commission and Operation Janus to invite the suspended Civil Aviation Director and question him over the said ‘can of worms’ in the Civil aviation.
“It is only the right thing to do so that allegations leveled at these aforementioned leaders are thoroughly investigated and those guilty of corruption and abuse of authority are held accountable for their wrong doings,” the Opposition said.
