OPPOSITION Leader Jeremiah Manele on Wednesday received a copy of the people’s Anti-Corruption Bill petition at the Paul Tovua’s Complex (PTC).
The copy of the petition was presented to Mr Manele by the chairman of the Civil Society Organization (CSO) Dr Huddie Namo.
During the brief meeting with the Opposition Leader, Dr Namo updated the Opposition Leader on the progressive work undertaken by the CSO in keeping pressure on the Government to reintroduce the Anti-Corruption Bill (ACB).
Dr Namo also thanked the Leader of Opposition and its members for their overwhelming support in the fight against corruption and the ACB.
“On behalf of the civil society groups, I would like to thank you and other Opposition MPs for your commitment and support towards the Anti-Corruption Bill. We really acknowledge your support,” the CSO chairman said.
In response, the Opposition Leader said his Office fully supports the good intentions of the Civil Society Organisation in making sure the ACB is brought back to Parliament.
“Fighting corruption is everyone’s business and the voice of civil society organisations must be acknowledged as an essential part of our democracy.
“And I must applaud the CSO for doing the right thing in a very peaceful manner,” he said.
Mr Manele also took the opportunity to assure the chairman of CSO of the Opposition’s position on the Bill.
“The Opposition’s position has not changed and we will always support the Anti-Corruption Bill because it will be a very important legislation for our people especially towards our fight against corruption.
“In fact, this Bill is a flagship policy of the DCCG so the onus is on the Prime Minister and his Cabinet to live up to their words,” he said.
The Leader of Opposition said his Office is also keeping a close eye on the promise made by the Prime Minister.
Meanwhile, Mr Manele has encouraged the CSO to strive for what is in the best interest of the people.
“Passing the Bill is the first step, but I would also like to see civil society groups continue to put pressure on the Government to make sure that if this Bill is passed, it must be gazette and implemented,” he said.
