Kwainamoro Forest Nursery in Auki Malaita province begins its 2018 tree distribution this week.
The Auki Principal Forestry officer Ronny Aiwewe confirmed this to Solomon Star in Auki saying, the 2018 tree distribution starts this week, and will continue in the coming weeks.
Mr. Aiwewe said of the three exotic species nursery at the Kwainamoro forest nursery only one species Mahogany is currently ready for distribution.
He said, the other two species Teak tree and Eucalyptus tree are not yet ready.
“At the moment, Kwainamoro nursery has over a thousand Mahogany trees ready to be distributed to local tree farmers in Malaita and schools.
“This week some local tree farmers already collected their trees and we are looking forward to distribute some of these trees to the schools to encourage reforestation in schools,” he added.
“Tree distribution to schools will start next week after the one week-break.
“After distributing the current nursery we will concentrate on Teak tree and Eucalyptus tree for our next distribution.”
With that, Mr. Aiwewe is calling on interested tree farmers in Malaita to come forward and submit their application to get a share of the current nursery.
He said with the large number of farmers in the province, farmers who first come will receive their shares while those who submitted their application late will have to wait for the next nursery later on this year.
He said tree replanting is important to replace forest as the island is losing more forest every year to commercial logging activities.
