SHORTLY after being given power to lead Paralympic in the country over the weekend during an AGM, Paralympic newly elected president Nihal Seneviratne and his executive wasted no time as they gear up for regional and international events lining up for them.
The newly elected president of the Solomon Islands National Paralympic Committee (SINPC) Nihal Seneviratne and the SINPC Secretary General, Casper Pule left the country yesterday for Spain to attend International Paralympic Committee (IPC) 2018 Membership Gathering set for this weekend.
Prior to their departure yesterday, president Seneviratne told Star Sports it is very important for the SINPC SG and himself as president to attend the IPC.
“The meeting in which Pule and I will attend in Madrid, Spain this weekend will provide an interactive platform for all members for strategic discussions and to exchange view on the IPC’s long term developments.
SINPC president who was also selected by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and Oceania Paralympic Committee (OPC) to lead Solomon Islands Paralympic team to 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan as Chef de Mission (CdM) after meeting the criteria need to attend the meeting in order to update his executive as well as their athletes with regards to their preparation for the games.
“Prior to the Tokyo Games we must attend Arafura Games in Darwin, Australia April next year, Oceania Athletics Champions set for 25-28 June 2019 and World Para athletics championship in Qatar from September 28 to 6th of October 2019.
“All these competitions are sanctioned events for Tokyo Paralympic Games,’’ he said.
“So we had a very big events coming up and we need to prepare as much as possible to send a good number of athletes to represent the country in these games,’’ he said.
The president added, Para sports that will compete in the above competitions are Archery, Table Tennis, Athletics, Judo, Taekwondo, Triathlon, Swimming and Powerlifitng.
