SOLOMON Islands Electoral Commission (SIEC) has already decided on the date for this year’s national election.
But Chief Electoral Officer Mose Saitala said they will have to wait for next month for Governor General Sir Frank Kabui to officially announce it.
He revealed this when he opened three-day training for election awareness officers SIEC is engaging to do community awareness in the coming weeks.
Saitala said they’ve already met the Governor General yesterday and have informed him of the polling date.
“It is very important for you to know that the process now is we are closing in to the confirmations by the Governor General for the official announcement of the polling date,” Saitala told participants.
“So this morning (yesterday) we will meet with the Governor General to see how the process will unfold and what time to expect the signing of the confirmations,” he added.
He said the Commission has already set the date for the election but will have to give it to the Governor General to announce it publicly.
Earlier,Saitala said the announcement is expected to be made before the end of the 1st week of February.
He explained campaigning will open a day after the election date is announced.
