The piles of uncollected rubbish in the streets of Auki have become an eyesore and concern for the general public.
These thrashes were left unattended since late last year.
A visit made to the rubbish piles have discovered that the wastes are decaying, which is now polluting the streets with its bad odour.
It also directly harms the public with foul smell in the current wet season.
Dogs are now attracted to the areas and could become carriers for diseases that may make people sick.
According to observations from the public, the impact of the uncollected rubbish has caused site pollution, which affects human health and may causes serious health diseases to human.
A health officer spoken to said,the foul smell generated from the piles of rubbish may likely affect humans by causing shortness of breath, headaches, eye irritation, or if large amounts are inhaled, even death.
The health officer explains that the exposure to hazardous wastes can affect human health where children will be more vulnerable to these pollutants.
He said that such practise of piling waste on the street may result in the accumulation of toxic substances in the food chain through the plants and animals that feed on it.
However a concerned resident in Auki, Nathaniel Maegwari seriously called on the Malaita provincial government to immediately address the issue.
He said he is worried that uncollected rubbish may paint a bad picture to the provincial government and the responsible department.
“These piles of rubbishes should be removed immediately from this site, otherwise this is a shameful practice for us Malaitans,” Maegwari said.
The responsible department within the provincial government could not be reached for comments on Saturday.
