The Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Honiara has clarified media reports that Taiwan has been put on notice about Government’s intention to increase funds for the constituencies.
The office in a statement on Tuesday made the clarification in response to a report in the Island Sun paper on Monday which has the headline; ‘“SOLOMON ISLANDS WANTS INCREASE IN FUNDS FOR CONSTITUENCIES, TAIWAN PUT ON NOTICE.’
But in a statement the Embassy said Taiwan remains committed to supporting Solomon Islands’ development aspirations.
“Taiwan also welcomes consultation with the Democratic Coalition Government for Advancement (DCGA) led by Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare to further strengthen their mutual cooperation.
“However, the DCGA has never conveyed to the Republic of China (Taiwan) Embassy in Honiara, any message regarding Taiwan’s budgetary support to SIG, as described in the aforementioned story.
“The ROC (Taiwan) Embassy wishes to inform Solomon Islands civil society of the truth through this statement,” the Embassy said in the statement.
