SOLOMON Islands and New Zealand signed the Solomon Islands Airport Management Company agreement last night in Honiara.
Visiting New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters, who arrived with a large delegation yesterday, signed the agreement with Foreign Affairs minister Jeremiah Manele.
Speaking at the occasion, Manele thanked the Government of New Zealand for its commitment and support towards the aviation sector in the country.
“Let me assure you that it is the desire of the Solomon Islands Government to see the Aviation sector in the country improved,” he said.
“In advancing this commitment we welcome the NZ Government generous support towards the achievement so far in getting us to work towards establishing entity to manage the operations of our airport infrastructure, safety and security,” Manele added.
He said NZ and Solomon Islands have come a long way and there will be a long way to go forward as well as all for the better.
Meanwhile, Peters said the NZ Government will continue to support Solomon Islands for a better future.
“With the completion of Munda International Airport we believe that tourism sector will be further boosted now and into the future,” he said.
“More to that it is our aim to help your Government to help support other airports in the provinces,” Peters added.
He mentioned Seghe and Taro as two of the airports that are currently on their radar.
The New Zealand delegation is made up of more than 70 members.
