THE Aruligo bridge in North West Guadalcanal needs to be replaced.
People of Tandai Sagalu and Savulei wants the bridge to be changed as the design has caused blockages every time its flooding.
North West Guadalcanal Stringer John Toki said it is better for any bridge construction to get information on the people living in those areas to find out more on the strength and the wide of the water during strong flooding.
“Currently, when it gets flooding, trees, bananas and other debris usually get trapped on the bridge and millions of dollars have been spent to do maintenance just to clear the bridge,” he said.
He said the bridge was built a long time ago and a new one is need that could serve the people well.
Mr Toki said the bridge is very important as it serves the many institutions in North West Guadalcanal such as Selwyn College, Melanesian Brotherhood Headquarters at Tambalia, Kohimarama, Veranaso, Aruligo Care Centre and Visale Parish Catholic centre.
“If nothing is done to change the bridge, maintenance on the bridge would continue which would be more expensive for the government,” he said.
He said vendors and most people of Guadalcanal use that bridge to get to and from Honiara to do marketing and other businesses.
Meanwhile, he added the other bridge that needs to be replaced is the Malagii bridge near Mangakiki community also in West Guadalcanal about four (4) kilometres to Lambi bay.
