TWO logging workers were killed in a horrific vehicle accident in east Fataleka, Malaita, last Saturday.
The deceased – a local and an Indonesian – were employees of Malaysian logging firm Samlimsan.
A third worker, a local, survived by jumping off the back of the vehicle before it rolled down a hill.
Information the Solomon Star received from east Fataleka said the incident happened around 11am after the Land Cruiser vehicle dropped off workers at place of work.
The logging operation is being carried out on Talafolo land.
Those who relayed the news said the vehicle was driven by the foreigner. It developed mechanical problems after dropping off the workers.
The local deceased is from Halisiu community.
Villagers say the vehicle rolled over three times before it came to rest.
The survivor was taken to a nearby clinic where he received medical treatment.
Body of the foreigner, 52, was taken to Kilu’ufi Hospital before it was flown over to Honiara.
Police have already attended the incident.
Villagers say Samlimsan paid $5,000 and five shell money as “peace money” to family of the local worker who perished in the incident.
Meanwhile, Malaita police say they are now investigating the matter.
Supervising Provincial Police Commander, Malaita Province, Inspector Charles Koto says his officers at the Atori Police Post in east Malaita attended to the report and have opened an enquiry file into the tragic accident.
“Our sincere condolences to the family members of the Indonesian employee and the local employee from Fataleka,” Inspector Koto said.
“As the enquiry into this tragic accident continues I want to urge all truck owners and drivers including logging companies operating in Malaita Province or elsewhere in the provinces to always make sure that your vehicles are serviced and in good working order.
“Drivers are also reminded that our roads in the rural areas are not so good so you must drive with all care.”
