MALAITANS who took part in a peaceful protest against government’s decision to switch diplomatic tie from Taiwan to China yesterday say their cries have fallen on deaf ears.
The protest came after 27 government members voted in a resolution to switch ties from traditional partner Taiwan to China.
Speaking to the Solomon Star in an interview a popular outspoken and frontline man of the peaceful protest program in Auki Max Bobby said government’s decision to switch tie to China is not in the best interest of Malaitans.
He said the current government led by Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare and his supporting Ministers are not the right leaders for people of Malaita and the country.
He said the 27 MPs who voted for China have decide not hear the cries of Malaitans and also not really representing the whole Solomon Islands and its people.
He described the decision as culturally inhuman of the fact that Taiwan is a traditional partner supporting country for the past 36 years.
“It seems that this government don’t want to listen to people of this nation and that will become a serious issue if government continue to fail to uphold the interest of of its people” Mr Bobby said.
However, Mr Bobby is worried that the rate of unemployment will increase following the closure of Taiwanese Embassy office and other centres leaving local workers especially in Malaita jobless.
Mr Bobby calls on 14 Malaita MPs to recognize the cries of people in Malaita for government to remain with Taiwan.
Its understood most Malaitans are not happy and raised concerns after the news to cut ties from Taiwan.
