Families, relatives and friends together with Bishop Peter Houhou celebrated his first anniversary as a bishop on Monday.
William Smith Toli from Catholic Communication in Auki reported that Bishop Peter traveled from Auki to his West Are’Are home at Toraraha on Sunday 13th October to mark the occasion.
He was consecrated and installed on the 14th October 2018 as the 3rd bishop of the Catholic diocese of Auki.
On the morning of Monday 14th October 2019 Bishop Peter celebrated a thanksgiving mass to commemorate the historic event not only of his life but of the Catholic Church in Solomon Islands.
After the celebration of the Eucharist there was a fellowship lunch and more entertainment was provided until it was time for the bishop to travel back to Auki in the afternoon.
Luis Morosini who witnessed the event said it was a joyous occasion indeed.
Mr. Morosini accompanied Bishop Peter for the event.
Bishop Peter Houhou is of Ulawa, Marau (Guadalcanal) and Are’are origin.
His mother from Malaita. Born on the 10th October 1966 at Marau sound, he attended primary school from 1974 to 1979.
He entered formation studies at Nazareth Apostolic Centre at Tenaru from 1985 to 1990 and continued at Holy Spirit Seminary at Bomana in Papua New Guinea from 1991 to 1998.
He was ordained as priest in 1999 and served in various parishes throughout the archdiocese of Honiara before being appointed as bishop of Auki in 2018.
The Catholic Diocese of Auki has an estimated population of 50,000 people who live in more than 270 Catholic Communities which comprise the 11 parish regions of the Diocese.
