ALL year six students have been placed to continue their secondary education in secondary schools across the country next year.
That’s according to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD) Dr. Franco Rodie.
He announced this during the MEHRD Annual Joint Review (AJR) 2019 in Honiara, Monday.
“I’m pleased to announce that every year six student has a place in a secondary school to continue their education in a year seven class next year,” Rodie said.
“This work was taken as a huge collaborative effort between my staff in Honiara, those in every province and the non-government school providers across the country,” he added.
“We have been calling this a phase-out, but I would now like to say it’s the removal of an internal high stakes examination regime at the primary educational level which we no longer need in our education system.”
Rodie said year six students will no longer have to sit a high stakes external examination to progress through their education.
“This is a major aspect that will contribute towards achieving full basic education, not only that but it is indeed heartening to know that we are addressing this issue in a more tangible way.
“One of our country’s education priorities is to make education accessible to our children especially at the junior secondary school level and we should be pleased with our efforts.
“The initial work on the desire to terminate the Solomon Islands Secondary Examination starts in 2013 and after nearly eight years awaiting this initiative this year we have achieved the phase-out of the year six examination, a previous barrier to access to secondary education,” Rodie said.
