POLICE have arrested a man in his 40s who allegedly stabbed his wife to death at Putagita logging camp, Roviana Lagoon, Western Province, last Sunday.
Supervising Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Western Province, Inspector Justina Fono confirmed this on Tuesday.
“The suspect, the husband of the deceased, escaped from the logging camp in a dugout canoe to Ugele to board a ship from there,” Fono said.
“But with assistance from the community, police were notified and officers arrested the suspect at the Ugele wharf on 6 January 2020,” she added.
“The suspect has been charged with murder contrary to section 200 of the penal code.
“Police investigators are preparing an application to remand the suspect for his trial at a later date.
“I appeal to both parties to refrain from taking the law into your own hands and allow police to investigate the matter.
“As supervising PPC Western Province, I would like to thank the people of Ugele for helping police for the arrest of the suspect.
“This is a kind of support we should do in our communities to assist police.”
The couple have five children.
The wife, 39, reportedly died from multiple stab wounds.
The husband is believed to be from Malaita, while the wife is from Marovo Lagoon.
