ARCHBISHOP Christopher Cardone on 26th February during the celebration of Ash Wednesday at Holy Cross Cathedral confirmed that this year’s Lenten season is a time of pray, repent and almsgiving.
The church always has a Lenten fund that is offered to the Parishes in the Archdiocese and during a recent priest council meeting, they passed a resolution that this year’s Lenten fund will be used to support Australia bush fire victims.
His Grace Archbishop Chris said the church has benefited a lot from Australia through education, health, and even social development.
“Therefore it’s important for us to support those who have suffered from the disaster whether the amount is big or small,” he said.
A number of Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Honiara had a sister relationship with four Catholic schools in Australia.
Therefore he encourages all the students and staff of these Catholic schools to support their friends in whatever they can.
“If you have something to donate in the season of Lent give to our responsible people so that we will give the Vincentian Priests who serve in the country to submit it to the St. Vincent De Paul (Vincentians) in Australia to support them.”
He said that St. Vincent De Paul is one of the worldwide societies in the Church that focus on charitable people.
“Our Lenten fund for this year will be donated to the victims of the bush fire. Not only the fund but our prayers to the victims to help them because we greatly benefit from their support,” he said.
Donations will continue to be collected till Easter Sunday, the Archbishop said.
