LOCAL students in Taiwan are continuing with their studies despite the threat from the coronavirus (COVID-19).
However, they do so under extra precautionary measures to ensure they are COVID-free in-spite of the contagious nature of the disease, reports reaching the paper said.
President of the local student association in Taiwan, Desmond Tige told this paper yesterday that their classes are still continuing but with little changes due to the steady increase of COVID-19 in Taiwan.
Tige said Taiwan is handling the situation quite well but like other countries, the disease is slowly spreading.
Mr. Tige said that every day like any other affected country, the number of positive cases steadily increases and as of 31st March 2020, confirmed cases in Taiwan reached 322 and is expected to increase in the coming days.
He said that all they have to do is to abide by the important precautionary measures imposed on them as the environment is not safe for them to move around.
“Schools continue with normal classes but we have to be alert at all times to ensure none of us is infected with the disease,” he said.
Tige said one of the everyday activities at the school is regular temperature check-ups because high fever is a common symptom of the disease.
“If any of us is checked and found with temperature exceeding 38 degrees celsius, he/she has no options but to undergo mandatory isolation,” he said.
Tige added that should any student of the university is found to contract the disease; the university will be closed indefinitely until such time health authorities declared otherwise.
He said that the universities in Taiwan are developing a new App for students to use in case of a shut-down and that would help students to do their classes online.
He added so far only 27 Solomon Islands students remained in Taiwan to do their studies whilst the rest have returned to be transferred to China following the recent diplomatic switch from ROC Taiwan to PRC.
