HUNDREDS of Selwyn Old Students Association (SOSA) members and their families join staff and students at Selwyn College, Marovovo, West Guadalcanal yesterday to commence the week long celebrations to commemorate the school’s 50th Golden Jubilee.
Saturday’s event started with the Walk Back to Selwyn College – a 3km parade – from Vaturanga Bridge (Lavasa) in West Guadalcanal to Selwyn College.
It was led by the Governor General Sir David Vunagi and Lady Mary Vunagi and the Archbishop of the Church of Melanesia Leonard Dawea.
SOSA members and current students of Selwyn College followed the official entourage in their divisional colours – Kirio in blue, Masi in white, Noabu in yellow, and Tahula in green.
The parade concluded at the school with the blessing and official unveiling of the 50th Golden Jubilee monument by Archbishop Dawea and Sir David.
The 50th anniversary monument is to remember the establishment of the school 50years ago in honour of Bishop George Augustus Selwyn.
In his welcome address, Selwyn College principal Fr. Davidson Ngwaeramo said Selwyn College has trained over the past 50 years a pool of various skilful men and women that helped to serve the different ministries of past governments and the present, the NGOs, the private business sectors, sports, SOEs and the church.
“This is the value that Selwyn College, one of the learning institutions among others, see it fit to come together to celebrate the past,” Fr Ngwaeramo said.
“May Selwyn College continue to be the pride of ACOM in the field of education, the manufacturer of human resources for many years to come.”
He also assured the SOSA family that as current custodians of the school they will work together with the SOSA family to help improve the current school facilities.
He then welcomed SOSA members and friends from the eastern, western, northern and southern parts of Solomon Islands.
“Welcome as we stand united in faith to celebrate the past and building our future as one people, one community, and one nation Solomon Islands,” the school principal said.
