A LOCAL scholar, Calvin Luiramo is looking to donate thousands of Science eBooks from his library to Honiara Senior High School.
This was after he learned that the school was burnt-down during the recent riot in Honiara – the night of November 24th Wednesday.
Luiramo is a Solomon Islands student currently doing his PhD research in earthquake engineering at Kyoto University in Japan.
He is from Malaita Province.
In a statement this week, Mr Luiramo said that he is yet to contact the school to arrange with the school Administration how he can deliver the eBooks library to the school and how students can freely access these eBooks.
He has heard of the destruction of the school, losing most school information, documents and school buildings.
When he heard about the destruction done to the school he decided to freely give the school his thousands of eBooks which he has prepared for the last 15 years.
“I would like to help Honiara High school by freely donating thousands of eBooks of my eBook library; I have been building my eBook library for 15 years and currently still building it.”
The eBooks library are mainly Mathematics, English, anthropology, astrophysics, cosmology, Geophysics, chemistry, Biology, physics, medicine, surgery, nursing, engineering and more, he said.
Luiramo said his eBook library also consists of science books, he hoped students who would like to take up science in their future career would find them helpful and motivational.
He further stated that one of his future projects is to set up eBook library where Solomon Islands students from primary to university students can access them freely
“I paid for these eBooks, it cost me money, time and effort, if there is anything that people need to get apart from money and food that might bring changes to their lives and the country, then it is knowledge.
“Gone were the days where our grandfathers live and practice a very rudimentary form of science, today’s world it is a world build on an algorithm civilization, from the handset gadgets in your palm to the clothes you wear on your body it is algorithms, the knowledge of science is far more important than any other times in history of man’s civilization,” he said.
“I have a personal conviction that science is the way forward even into the far future for the challenges that human race faces, this is the only tool in man’s disposition to make changes for better civilization. There is no better time than this time to invest our time, effort and money to become the master of this craft.” said Calvin.
EBook is a book in electronic form that can be read on a computer or handheld device rather than in print.
