AN Australian Medical Assistance Team (AUSMAT) touched down in Honiara today (Saturday 29th January) to bolster our capacity to respond to the current COVID-19 outbreak.
A statement from the Australian High Commission in Honiara said the AUSMAT rapid assessment team are a multidisciplinary healthcare team deployed by the Australian Government in response to international disasters.
The AUSMAT team of eight includes specialists in emergency medicine, infectious disease control, logistics and occupational therapy.
The statement said AUSMAT’s primary role will be to provide the Ministry of Health and Medical Services with clinical advisory support for the COVID-19 emergency response focusing on infection prevention and control, referral care pathways, and the distribution of critical health supplies.
Australia has deployed AUSMAT to Honiara in response to a request from the Solomon Islands Government.
