THE Ministry of Health and Medical Services is strongly calling on anyone in home isolation who is feeling weak or dizzy after days of fever to urgently seek medical help at the hospital.
Minister of Health and Medical Services Dr Culwick Togamana made this call during his daily update on the COVID-19 situation in the country late this evening.
Dr Togamana said there is increasing need for oxygen as many who appear to not need oxygen actually need oxygen.
“…this medical condition is called hypoxia.
“This is very serious and can lead to fainting or collapse.
“Therefore, I have been requested to issue a strong call to anyone at home who starts to feel weak and dizzy after days of fever must not wait but to seek urgent and immediate medical help at the hospital,” Dr Togamana said.
He said currently at the National Referral Hospital, 100 COVID-19 patients are admitted in the hospital after nine patients were discharge and 14 new admissions were made in the last 24 hours.
“The current total being managed by the National Referral Hospital is 100 patients – 51 patients are severely sick and are currently on oxygen, 38 cases are moderate and 11 cases mild,” Dr Togamana said.
He said the hospital also recorded seven deaths in the past 24hours.
“…all seven are unvaccinated with underlying health conditions, mainly non-communicable diseases,” he said.
To meet the daily demand for oxygen at the hospitals, the Minister said the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) has procured 100 more oxygen units for distribution to the National Referral Hospital, the provincial hospitals and health clinics.
Dr Togamana said with the support of the Ministry of Finance and Treasure the MHMS has also paid and secured an additional 400 oxygen units.
The Minister also took the opportunity to thank Australia through the Australia Medical Assistance Team (AUSMAT) for its great job in providing advice and recommendation to our hospitals and our health workers in the provinces.
He said support from Australia was rendered in the area of COVID-19 patient management, assisting in arranging plan for a new normal business continuity plan to services, logistics and workflow.
“Due to the additional COVID Ward, assistance has also been rendered towards dead body management, purchase of urgent medical equipment for the Central
Field Hospital and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the government and people of Australia for the substantial support to the ministry,” Dr Togamana said.
