SOLOMON Islands has taken the stand to join 141 member countries of the United Nations this week to condemn Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.
The country’s stand comes as the war between Russia and Ukraine continues to rage on.
Lives have been lost, families separated, millions displaced and are fleeing for their lives to nearby countries to take refuge.
There are heart-breaking stories and photos of fathers saying good bye to their children and wives.
Many of the fathers have decided to remain and defend their country during the invasion.
Many of the families are not sure whether they will ever see the men in their families and loved ones ever again because of the onslaught by the Russian troops.
The war has changed everything for many families in Ukraine.
We are not sure what will happen in the coming days. But Russia is not backing down.
The world is concerned and yesterday’s vote has shown that many countries are opposed to the invasion.
UK Foreign Secretary Elizabeth Truss said the United Nations General Assembly has voted with an overwhelming majority condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia is isolated.
The United Kingdom and Solomon Islands stands with Ukraine, she said.
Opposition Leader Matthew Wale yesterday thanked the Prime Minister (PM) Manasseh Sogavare and the Foreign Affairs for supporting the UN resolution to reprimand Russia’s invasion in Ukraine.
On Tuesday the Opposition Leader wrote a letter to the PM encouraging the Government to support the UN resolution.
That letter asked PM to seriously consider condemning the unprovoked invasion of the sovereign nation of Ukraine by Russia.
The PM has responded to acknowledge the Opposition’s position and support on the matter.
PM acknowledged that the country has a duty to protect the principles upon which UN stands, which includes the respect for territorial integrity and security interests of member states.
Wale thanked PM for the making the stand.
Solomon Islands stand is also in line with the UN Charter and its principles to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each other, the Opposition Leader said.
The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday this week overwhelmingly voted in favour of the resolution in condemning Russia’s invasion in Ukraine.
In a rare emergency session called by the U.N. Security Council, the resolution was supported by 141 of the assembly’s 193 members, five voted against and 35 abstentions.
Solomon Islands is amongst those who supported the resolution.
In the country, many Solomon Islanders have expressed their concern over the war via the social media especially its effect on families, especially young children and women.
Their future is in limbo and people are living in fear and confusion.
